Tree Messits!

It is hard to imagine that we have reached the 3-month point already.  But then, of course, it is even harder to imagine our family without Vitalik and Lera!

This month has included:
- Vitalik's first ever birthday party
- Eugene's first Father's Day as a Dad-of-Five
- Lots of Swim Team Activities for Vitalik
- L&V Doing a Presentation on Ukraine and Russian Language for Spencer and Heath's Classes at School
- Getting registered for middle school (which was a lot harder than it sounded, but did finally get them into 7th and 8th grades as we had hoped to!)
- Lots of social time with friends
- The 4th of July (Happy Birthday America!)

Things continue to get easier, and little-by-little, we are all regenerating from all of the stresses of the past year.  The kids's English and general confidence and comfort levels continue to improve.  I remember when we first met Lera and Vitalik, the language barrier seemed like the scariest part of adopting them.  We were assured by everyone who knew about these things that within three months they would be able to function pretty well with broken English, and now that we have reached the three-month mark, I definiltey think this is a fair assessment.  Of course, they don't understand everything we could possibly say to them, but we are all able to communicate quite well with the language that they have picked up, and they continue to learn more each day.

We are enjoying a lovely summer with a relaxed schedule.  The kids continue to do some schoolwork at home with me each day, and while they would rather be vegging, they are very good sports and barely complain at all.  All-in-all, we are all feeling very satisfied, thankful, and eager to see what month four has in store for our family!

Vitalik's Birthday!

Dad got Vitalik a volleyball net for his birthday, which, with a little music, made for an instant party atmosphere!  We have left it up all month and have enjoyed lots of fun in the back yard with family and friends.

The birthday boy greeting special friend Amanda, the missionary whose idea it was to bring these great kids to Raleigh last summer for the adventure that changed all of our lives forever!  Her team will be bringing another group of fabulous kids to Raleigh this month.

Vitalik was like a little boy on Christmas!  He could not have been more excited about his presents!  What a joy!

Amanda with sweet Nastya, another friend from L&V's school in Ukraine.  Nastya is now home with her new family too, and she and Lera enjoy chatting on the phone when their busy social schedules permit it!
Very special photo of Grandmother Laura with all five of our children.  What a priceless moment this was!
Vitalik taking it all in.  A really special moment in his life!
Breaking out the new toys, his heart's deepest desire was a remote control car.  He got three!

Vitalik master-minded this creative water slide.  All siblings thought he was pretty smart and they happily played for a LONG time!  Spencer did end up with a few bruises, but overall it was good fun!

Talking to Spencer's class about life in Ukraine.

Mom and Dad got to go out for our 19th wedding anniversary (thanks to Adam and Eleni for hanging with the kids!)  Lera and Vitalik insisted that we needed to look really good for our big date, and helped us select our outfits.

Boating!

Life on Marz - Month Two!

Has it been two months already?  That's what the calendar tells us!

Overall, we're all doing great and things are getting easier, I think.  This is not to say that we haven't taken turns hitting walls this month.  At different times, for different ones of us, exhaustion has set in and we've had to just acknowledge that we are freakin' tired.  One day, for example, Vitalik went back to bed after breakfast and just slept until 3pm.  He was uncharacteristically down that day and just needed to rest a LOT.  I finally got him up with a milkshake bribe, which eventually brought him back to life.  As he started feeling like talking a little more, he acknowledged that he's tired of speaking English all the time (con etchno!  of course!)  From the time they wake up each day until the time they go to sleep, their brains have to work a LOT harder than we will ever know, just to function.  They are both doing an incredible job and we're so proud of them.  Of course, the fact that Vitalik has had only one such day during his first two months in the US is pretty amazing.  :o)

This month, Lera has become less moody, more carefree and comfortable, and just seems happier than she seemed during her first few weeks in the US.  She and Aunt Tracy have become very close, and she loves sleepovers with Tracy and little cousin Zendi.  One night, Tracy braided her hair into a million braids, which looked very cool (though daddy hated it of course!)  Lera and her Dad have a special bond, and he pretends to cry when she leaves for a sleepover, sometimes calling her and playfully begging her to come home.  Of course, the little brothers follow Vitalik's lead and all cheer with joy when she leaves for a sleepover! ;-)  She is a quirky girl with a strong sense of self, and we love her a lot!

Our Ukrainian kids got to meet their Kentucky grandpa and their Korean grandma (Harmony) this month!  They learned that Grandpa has a very big belly, puts his teeth in a cup when he sleeps, and cooks a mean country breakfast.  They learned that Harmony gives fantastic presents and cooks incredible Korean food!  On their last night here, Harmony cooked an awesome meal for our entire extended family.  After sampling the foods, Vitalik declared, "Harmony no go home tomorrow.  Maybe stay two months."  Later after eating way too much, he patted his big belly and said, "What name my baby?  Maybe Jack."

Both kids are speaking English with more confidence.  They ride their new bikes (Spuh-see-buh, Harmony and Grandpa!) to the pool and around the neighborhood.  They are enjoying many kind new friends in the neighborhood, and they still have more than dvah messits (two months) until school starts in the fall, so we are all feeling optimistic that by the time they enter school, the new friends and the improved English will make things a lot easier than they may have been if our arrival in the US had been timed differently.

Vitalik has joined our neighborhood swim team and we are incredibly proud of him!  Jumping in and swimming freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke and butterfly with kids who have received proper instruction in these strokes for the past 8-10 years takes courage and optimism, and our son has these qualities in abundance!  :o)  After one week of practice, he has all of the major strokes down, and completed our team's practice meet without embarrassing himself at all (which was my personal prayer for him!) -- the worst part was having to get used to the speedo shorts (thankfully the long kind!) that the kids wear during meets, and now that he's over that hurdle, I think he'll really enjoy the season.  He is excited to begin working to break his personal best records at each meet.  We are especially thankful for the kind friends who help to translate the coach's instructions for each practice drill into words/phrases/and motions that Vitalik understands!

Lera elected not to join the swim team ("no good costume"), and we think she made the right choice.  She is loving her social time at the pool each day, visiting with kind friends, playing, diving, and collecting photos of Justin Bieber!

The three original Cline boys are all doing great as well.  All 5 of our kids still totally accept one another as siblings, and we are so thankful!  We continue to add new Russian words and phrases to our family vocabulary each week.  As Spencer (8) signed up for a Spanish class at school, he declared, "I know I will be good at learning Spanish, because just think about how much Russian I have learned already!"  We adore hearing Lera and Vitalik speak their native language to one another and to Russian-speaking friends, and we pray that they will never lose the ability to fluently speak Russian, as people who fluently speak multiple languages are super-heros in our view!  Both kids have fun laughing at our attempts to speak their language.  The smiles I get when I playfully scold or tease Vitalik in broken Russian are particularly priceless!

It is exciting to look back and see how much progress we have all made in the past month.  Our goal is not perfection, but incremental progress.  As we begin our third month together, we know we are tired, we are beginning to regenerate a little bit at a time, and we are looking forward to a great summer.

Here are a few photos from the past month!

Playing dress-up!  Good times!

Fun with the costume box.  They both already have plans for what they will be for Halloween!

Aunt Tracy is one of Lera's very best pals!

My mothers' day breakfast in bed!  Vitalik looks thrilled to be awake early doesn't he! ;-)

Vitailk took this photo of his funny Dad seeking comfort foods after a week of too much (robata) work!

Now that she is retired, Harmony takes classes to learn better English too.  She has a lot in common with her new grandchildren. :o)

Vitalik with good friend David (Yarik), also from Lezovoe Boarding School, now residing two miles down the road in Cary.

Life on Marz - Our First Month at Home

Greetings from the red planet!  We have been home for a month now and things are going very well.  Of course, adjusting to our "new normal" takes a bit of energy for all of us, but all-in-all, we are incredibly satisfied and just so thankful to be living through this special time together.

The remarkable thing about the past month has been how perfectly natural everything feels most of the time.  Vitalik and Lera have easily claimed our family and our home as their own.  All five of the kids just believe the whole thing.  There has been no notable jealousy between any of them... they live, laugh, love, cry, irritate the crap out of each other, laugh some more.  I think that all-in-all, the seven of us are really enjoying this whole new life together, and honestly could not imagine it being any other way.  It is really beautiful ... noisy and chaotic most of the time, but beautiful for sure!

The kids are doing lots of bike-riding and skateboarding, back-yard soccer, and playing with cousins and friends.  We are going through neosporin ointment and bandaids with such vigor that Eugene seriously needs to consider investing in the companies that make both products.

Since we arrived home so late in the school year, we have decided to informally home-school until fall, at which time, Lera will enter 7th grade and Vitalik, 8th grade.  The new kids' English is coming along very well, and the little brothers and cousins enjoy using the few Russian words and phrases that they are learning.

Here are a few photos from our first month at home together.
First, from our arrival at RDU on April 9th, 2011.  It was a glorious homecoming for sure!!

Virtually all of the people in this photo, foreground and background, were there to greet us.

Excited brothers with cousin Krystin.

Anxious friends, cousins, and brothers.

Here we come!  It was really amazing to be welcomed by so many special loved ones!!!  What a special moment!
One of those there to greet us was Lera and Vitalik's friend Yarik (David) from the same school in Ukraine.
He had arrived home in America only a few weeks earlier.

RDU Parking Grarage... heading home.

This photo was taken during our first few minutes at home as a family of seven!

Our first month at home together has included LOTS of back-yard fun!

Friends prepared so many awesome meals and treats that we didn't have to cook for at least a week.  This beautiful "Welcome Home" cake was made by our friend Julie.  It was delicious!!

Bleeding Brothers!  Very proud of their first cycling scrapes together!
Zendi, the youngest of our NC brood, adores her new cousins and they seem to enjoy her company as well!  She and Lera are really good pals!

Feeding apples to the horse who lives over our back fence.
Vitalik and little Zendi chillin' and watching TV together.

Lera poses with dear friend Eleni... aren't her new glasses pretty!?

Lera enjoyed being reunited with Angelina.  Angelina was also part of the group of kids who came from Ukraine to NC last summer.  She joined her new family in America a few weeks before we got home with Lera and Vitalik.

OK, so with all of his awesome tricks, Vitalik had managed to live this long without breaking a bone... and after only 8 days in our home, yep, you guessed it... a broken collar bone from a cycling accident on our street!  This picture perfectly encapsulates his "recovery phase."  You should have seen the tricks that kid could do with one arm in a sling!  :o)

Vitalik and Lera's first experience with the Easter Bunny!

Ten good-lookin' cousins - Easter 2011.  :o)
